Profile

Pronounced "he-low", hilo is an eponymous art and design studio located in Washington, DC. Named for the childhood nickname of award-winning Japanese-American architect Hiroshi Jacobs, the studio strives to make every project people-centric - interrogating how people relate to space and each other.

Clients and collaborators include CulturalDC, Ditto Residential, Studios Architecture, Georgetown BID, Jair Lynch Real Estate Partners, and Mount Vernon Triangle CID, among others.

The practice has been published in Surface Magazine, Dezeen, DC Modern Luxury, Designboom, Suckerpunch, Bloomberg Businessweek, and On TAP, among others.

Hiroshi Jacobs, Founder

Educated at Tulane and Harvard, Hiroshi draws inspiration from the tension between the simplicity and complexity found in nature. Often his work employs a layered composition of simple materials that invites users to experience spaces from different perspectives.  He finds joy in breaking down complex problems to their core and synthesizing creative solutions that are beautiful, functional, and practical.

Outside of the practice, Hiroshi is committed to community engagement as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for CulturalDC and a member of the Art Review Panel in Montgomery County, MD. He is currently serving as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland, having previously taught design at Catholic, Tulane, and Harvard.  He is licensed to practice architecture in DC, MD, & VA
